Happy Friday and Happy 1st of June. Summer is almost certainly here and we've been transitioning our closet for warmer days but keeping a few key layering pieces for when it does get chilly (unpredictable northwest weather!)
We recently came upon this TEDTalk by Mindy Scheier, founder of Runway of Dreams Foundation - a nonprofit that works toward a future of inclusion, acceptance and opportunity in the fashion industry for people with disabilities. In her talk, she shares her journey that inspired her design stylish adaptive clothing to help empower people with disabilities. Highlighting adaptive clothing or pieces with adaptive design components on them has been in our heart for awhile now and wanted to share our take on it regularly on the blog.
SO, What is adaptive FASHION?
ADAPTIVE FASHION are garments, shoes and accessories that are design specifically for, or have an element in their design, that allows the piece designed to be easily worn by people who may experience difficulty dressing themselves due to an inability to manipulate closures or due to a lack of a full range of motion required for self-dressing.
INCLUSIVITY IS STYLISH
The marriage for form and functionality is a key principle to elegant design. Like Mindy, we firmly believe that adaptive fashion doesn't only have to serve its function but has the potential to allow designers to innovate whilst improving and empowering the lives of many people.
ADAPTIVE WIN: BALENCIAGA SPEED TRAINERS
We have been eyeing this shoe ever since Balenciaga announced that they will be releasing the kids version of their popular speed trainer. We purchased ours at Smallable - a designer children's clothes and home interior boutique based in France. One of the key selling point for us is the ease of use for kids like Neela who may not have the most refined motor skills. Tying shoelaces has been a daily struggle for her and having a beautifully designed, slip-on sneaker has really encouraged her and given her the courage to dress herself in the morning. Not to mention, they are mad stylish too!
